What does a pattern contain
Each naeyen PDF pattern contains pattern pieces in the specified sizes. You will receive the pattern in A4, Letter, A0, and as a projector file (except Talea).
The detailed step-by-step instructions include clear and helpful photos.
Most patterns contain layers that you can turn on and off in your PDF reader. This allows you to print only your size(s).
Our patterns are digital instant downloads – you will not receive a printed pattern by mail.
Yes!
The seam allowances are already included in each pattern piece – so you don’t need to add anything extra.
For patterns made of jersey or other stretchy fabrics, the seam allowance is usually 1 cm, and for woven fabrics, it's usually 1.5 cm. Any exceptions to this will be noted directly in the pattern.
You'll receive the pattern in A4, US Letter, A0, and as a projector file (except for Talea). This gives you complete flexibility in printing—whichever works best for you.
Layered patterns allow you to print only the sizes you actually need . No more puzzling over countless lines or tedious tracing – with the layered feature, you can precisely select the right sizes.
Important: you need the paid version of Adobe Acrobat Reader; this is not currently available in the free version.
Our sewing instructions are available in interactive PDF format. If your PDF reader supports this, you'll enjoy the following benefits:
- Table of Contents: Click on the heading to jump directly to that step.
- Glossary: We explain many sewing terms in the glossary at the very end of the PDF. In the sewing instructions, you can simply click on a blue-highlighted term to jump directly to the explanation in the glossary.
No, not currently.

You can download your pattern via the confirmation page after purchase and via the confirmation email.
Printing & Plotting
Our digital patterns are designed for A4 and US Letter paper sizes and can be conveniently printed at home. Please make sure you select the format that matches your printer's settings—in Europe, this is usually A4, while in the US, it's Letter.
Before printing the entire pattern, we recommend printing the test square first. This way, you can ensure your printer is printing the correct size.
The A0 format is also available for professional printers.
Open the downloaded file with your PDF reader. We recommend Adobe Acrobat so you can use the layers feature.
Before printing:
First, please check that the checkbox has the correct dimensions. It should be 5 × 5 cm (1 31/32 inches). If it isn't, check the scaling settings in your print dialog. Make sure the option is set to "Actual Size" or "100% " —the exact setting depends on your printer and software. This is the only way to ensure the pattern prints correctly and without distortion.
Print: If the checkbox is the correct size, you can now print your pattern.
Tip: Instead of printing out the sewing instructions, view them on your laptop, tablet, or phone. This saves paper and money. And thanks to the interactive table of contents, you can jump to the steps you need right now.
Gluing isn't your thing?
Then we recommend the A0 format. You can easily have it printed at an online plotting service or copy shop—saving yourself the hassle of assembling the pages. Or you can use the projector/beamer file.
A0 is a large paper format: one A0 page = 16 A4 pages.
You can conveniently print A0 files either through an online plotting service or take them to a local copy shop. A0 files are printed on a single large sheet or on a few sheets, depending on the size of the pattern. This saves you the hassle of gluing together multiple A4 or US Letter pages.

Home prints can easily warp in high temperatures —especially if the paper has been stored in a warm room or the printer itself is very hot. This can happen, for example, when printing many pages at once. This can lead to variations in the print and also in the fit of the pattern.
We therefore recommend that you always
- Print the test square in advance and check whether the dimensions are reproduced correctly.
- Only print 5-10 pages of the pattern at a time and then let the printer cool down .
A test square is a small check box you'll find on a printed pattern—usually in a corner or on the first page. It has a fixed size, for example, 5 × 5 cm , and is used to check whether your printer has printed the pattern to scale.
Why is this important?
If your printer reduces or enlarges the pattern (e.g. due to incorrect scaling settings), the measurements will no longer be correct – and the finished garment may not fit.
How to use the test square:
- Print the page with the square.
- Measure it with a ruler.
- If it is exactly the size specified, everything is correct.
- If not, print again and make sure the scaling is set to "Actual Size" or "100%" .
Scaling is set differently for each printer. You can usually find it in your printer settings.
By default, many programs automatically reduce the size of pages when printing. Before printing, check your print settings and make sure that scaling is set to "100%" or "None," depending on how the option is called in the program.
In some cases, you may also need to adjust this setting in the program's preferences. For example, with Adobe Reader on Mac, it's often necessary to adjust something both in the print dialog and in the general app settings.

Important: you need the paid version of Adobe Acrobat Reader; this is not currently available in the free version.
Here's how to easily put together your pattern:
- Cut off the bottom and right edges of each sheet along the line.
- Glue the pages together with a glue stick or tape so that the circle markings line up exactly.
- Make sure that all lines blend neatly into one another and that the outlines are clearly visible.
- In the sewing instructions you will find a numbered overview of all pages - so you can easily see which pages belong together.
Sizes and dimensions
You'll find the included sizes in the description of each pattern. Our new patterns include EU sizes 32 - 60.
Please check whether your required size is included before purchasing.
Please do not rely on your usual clothing size or the measurements of another pattern label – sizes can vary greatly.
Every naeyen pattern includes a body measurement chart, making it easy to find the right size for you. All you need are your current measurements.
If you want to read more about why sizes don't fit the same across brands, check out our blog article " Why Sizes Vary from Brand to Brand ."
Plusness is the wiggle room a pattern allows for in addition to body measurements. It ensures that clothing doesn't fit tightly (unless that's intended), but rather falls smoothly, is comfortable, and offers freedom of movement.
A few examples:
- For a tight blouse, the extra width may only be 2-4 cm.
- For a loose shirt or an oversized jacket, it can be 10 cm or more.
The amount of extra width depends on the style of clothing and the fabric – stretchy fabrics often need less, stiffer materials tend to need more.
Before sewing, check how much extra width you'll get compared to your body measurements. If you don't like tight-fitting clothes, you should choose patterns with more extra width. If you prefer tight-fitting clothes, you should aim for less extra width, a more fitted cut, and shape-enhancing seams (darts, princess seams, or princess seams).

PDF Reader - Layers
Layered patterns allow you to print only the sizes you actually need . No more puzzling over countless lines or tedious tracing – with the layered feature, you can precisely select the right sizes.
When printing, simply select the size(s) you want to sew. If you don't see the layers, make sure you open the pattern with the paid version of Adobe Acrobat Reader—other programs often don't support this feature.
And if you're new to layers, there are great step-by-step tutorials on YouTube.
Unfortunately, PDF readers on mobile devices don't currently support layers. It's best to open and print the pattern from a computer or laptop.
Beamer & Projector
Naeyen sewing patterns often include a projector file. A projector file , or projector file for sewing, is a special PDF format designed to project the pattern directly onto the fabric—without printing or gluing.
A projector file contains large, clear cut pieces, often with thicker lines and colored layers to make them easy to see.
The file is designed to be projected to scale onto a surface—for example, directly onto fabric.
A projector file is designed to project your pattern directly onto the fabric—without any paper or glue. Here's how it works:
Setting up the projector:
You'll need a projector that can project onto your cutting table from above. Make sure it projects to scale—that is, without distortion.
Open file:
It's best to open the projector file (PDF) with Adobe Acrobat Reader so you can use the layers feature. This allows you to display only the size you need.
Calibrate:
Use the built-in test square (e.g., 5 × 5 cm) to check if the projection is the correct size. Measure with a ruler – if it's correct, you're ready to go!
Cropping:
Lay your fabric flat on the table, project the pattern piece, and cut directly along the lines. You can also mark with chalk first and then cut.
